As in all wars, a great strategy and superb tactics is not enough to win - luck plays an important role as well. Try to hold your units in formations as long as you can because the enemies will try to destroy your second line units if they'll have the chance. Ranged units and spellcasters are especially prone to enemy cavalry and infantry.
The battles get very hard pretty fast, as you get closer to the Blue Coast - so try to gain as much experience as possible in the initial regions. Loosing is fun and each playthrough doesn't take much time, so keep true to your tactics and try again if you're defeated.
